Recipe carbon accounting: an illustrative calculation

A recipe footprint depends on ingredient quantities, compatible factors, portions and the chosen boundary. Decide what is included before comparing recipes. Factor relevance can depend on ingredient state, sourcing and geography.

Consider a fictional ten-serving batch with two generic ingredients. Ingredient A uses 2 kg and an invented factor of 2 kg CO2e/kg, contributing 4 kg CO2e. Ingredient B uses 0.5 kg and an invented factor of 4 kg CO2e/kg, contributing 2 kg CO2e. The ingredient-only total is 6 kg CO2e, or 0.6 kg CO2e per serving.

All factors and quantities in this example are illustrative. Cooking, packaging and other activities are excluded. The example is not a complete product life-cycle assessment. Operational work requires suitable sources and a documented boundary. Compare recipes only on a compatible basis.
